Fruits Basket is the story of a girl named Honda Tohru, who recently lost her mother due to a car accident. She's a hard-worker to the extreme and therefore never gives up, even though she's alone and living in a tent in the woods. One day, as she's walking to school, she stumbles upon a large house, one that she's never seen before. Outside on the porch are small snacks in the shape of the Juunichi, the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. Her curiosity sparked, she comes closer to look, when a man comes out the door. His name is Souma Shigure, and it turns out he shares the house with his cousin Souma Yuki, the extremely popular "prince" of Tohru's class.

Eventually Tohru ends up living in their house with them, under very interesting circumstances. For the Souma family is not quite normal. In fact, there's a curse in the Souma family, one that's both funny and a burden, and has haunted the people associated with it throughout their lives. You see, the members of the Souma family are cursed by vengeful spirits, and have been for over a few hundred years. These are the vengeful spirits of the Juunichi. Each person born in the year of a certain animal transforms into that animal whenever they're hugged by the opposite sex or their bodies get nervous. After a little while they return to normal. However, this amount of time varies with each transformation. To top it off, when they transform back, they're naked! Tohru finds these facts out quite unexpectedly and to everyone's shock as Kyou turns into an orange cat, Yuki into a gray mouse, and Shigure into a large, black dog in front of her eyes. For Kyou is cursed by the vengeful spirit of the cat, and Yuki was born in the year of the mouse, Shigure in the year of the dog.

The series follows Tohru and her relationship with the Souma family, and how she ends up revolutionizing the lives of those around her. Interested yet? Of course you are! Visit my Fruits Basket site, Chiisana Inori, to learn more. (What a shameless plug!)
